Hi everyone,

I’ve been doing a deep dive into our data protection strategy for SharePoint Online backup, and honestly, the more I read, the more concerned I get about relying solely on Microsoft’s native features.

It’s easy to assume that because our data is in the cloud, it’s automatically "backed up." But looking at the fine print, Microsoft’s responsibility primarily covers infrastructure uptime and platform availability—not necessarily our actual content. While versioning and the recycle bin are helpful for accidental deletions, they aren't true backups. They don't protect us against mass ransomware encryption, insider threats, or the permanent loss of data that’s been hard-deleted beyond the retention window.

I’m worried that if we face a real disaster, trying to restore large-scale data from native recycle bins will be a nightmare, both in terms of time and data integrity.

Has anyone here made the move to a dedicated, third-party backup solution? I’ve been looking into tools like Shoviv SharePoint Backup to get better control, including granular recovery and point-in-time snapshots that native tools just don’t offer.

Are you all using third-party tools to bridge this "backup gap"? I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether the added layer of security and the ability to restore specific items quickly is worth the investment.

Thanks!
